How to care for wood furniture; it’s a question we get all the time, and the answer is super simple: lemon oil.
Its cold outside and probably super dry inside your house. The combination can wreak havoc on real wood furniture store, and it’s very important this time of year to take proper care of your pieces.
Unless a client has special ordered something else, the only finish Dave uses in his work is hand-rubbed linseed oil. This offers the double benefit of letting the natural beauty of the wood show through while offering a natural protective finish. You need to oil your pieces to maintain the finish and to prevent dryness and cracking, and we recommend using only lemon oil.
Here’s how to care for your natural wood furniture (again, this is only for pieces with a linseed oil finish):
- Use lemon oil. Apply a thin but generous coat and rub gently into the wood with a soft cotton cloth (we use old socks, old dishtowels, whatever old cotton rags we have on hand). Don’t leave any streaks or standing oil. Don’t forget the sides of the piece, the base, and the legs, too. This goes for headboards and bed frames, too.
- In the winter, we recommend doing this as part of your normal cleaning regimen or whenever the piece looks dry, but at least every two weeks. The rest of the year monthly applications should be fine, unless you live in a very dry climate, in which case we recommend weekly applications.
- If your piece sits in front of a fireplace, be sure to keep it oiled properly.
- Never use any wax or sprays, like Pledge, on your natural wood furniture. Just lemon oil.
5., if your piece has a gloss or lacquer finish you should never need to polish it; just dust or clean it with a damp cloth or microfiber towel.
That’s it. It’s super simple to care for your pieces. If you oil them properly they will last a lifetime.
